The Foundation recently partnered with the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor to fund the completion of the Mohawk Valley Water Trail. The 128-mile trail along the historic Erie Canal will ultimately provide significant and vital economic development and tourism opportunities for the entire region.

Since Oct. 26, 1825, the Erie Canal has been the source of unparalleled economic activity and vitality for the Mohawk Valley. The Foundation is committed to helping to restore its impact through this partnership. Thanks to the partnerships and funding sources that have emerged, the Mohawk Valley Water Trail can improve accessibility to the canal and showcase the region’s unique heritage and promote recreation.

We expect that the Erie Canal’s historic cultural impact on the Mohawk Valley will make this trail a source of pride for the community, taking visitors on a journey through our region’s deep valleys, rolling countryside, and diverse communities served by the Erie Canal for generations.
