The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc. is pleased to announce 17 grants totaling $543,086 to organizations serving Herkimer and Oneida counties.
- Colgate University received $45,000 to involve students from the university’s Upstate Institute in community service by working with the Legal Aid Society to assist pro bono attorneys in preparing bankruptcy filings for low-income clients.
- Faxton/St. Luke’s Healthcare Foundation received $50,000 to support start-up costs for the Keith A. Fenstemacher Center for Continuous Learning.
- Preserve Our Past was awarded $1,360 to survey and document historic buildings in Little Falls to aid in their preservation.
- To upgrade their 1960 electrical and computer networking system to meet current needs for data sharing and equipment, Catholic Charities of Herkimer County was granted $33,600.
- Catholic Charities of Oneida & Madison Counties was awarded $21,090 to complete building improvements at their St. Martin de Porres Community Center on Howard Avenue in Utica. This building is the base for several of their community programs.
- The City of Rome received a grant of $50,000 to assist with the second phase of renovations at the J.F. Kennedy Civic Arena.
- Hope House was granted $100,000 to assist with construction costs of a new 8,000 square foot one-story building to allow them to meet the increasing demand for their services.
- The Masonic Medical Research Lab was awarded $42,500 for the purchase of new equipment to increase the capacity of programs to train future scientists and clinicians.
- Northern Community Pop Warner will receive $25,000 to help construct a new building at the Perry Field Sports Complex in Holland Patent.
- Rome Baseball Association will benefit from a $10,817 grant to assist with the construction costs of a maintenance building to store equipment at their baseball complex.
- A grant in the amount of $50,000 will support the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York’s capital campaign to build a larger, more accessible home to house families from nearby counties – including Herkimer and Oneida – whose children are being treated at one of three Syracuse-area hospitals.
- St. Elizabeth Medical Center was awarded $50,000 help install a wireless local area network for use by medical staff, students, patients and visitors to the hospital.
- The otter exhibit at Wild Center will be expanded to enhance visitor experience and increase the otters’ habitat with a grant of $30,025.
- The Frank J. Basloe Library in Herkimer will receive $10,000 to upgrade its lighting.
- Children’s Corner, a child-care facility in Rome, was awarded $5,400 to purchase mulch for their playground.
Foundation President and CEO Peggy O’Shea remarked, “The grants recently awarded demonstrate the diversity of not-for-profit work that benefits the residents of Herkimer and Oneida counties. Each grant will help these organizations make life better in our area, and are especially necessary in these trying times.”
