Grants Available Through Student Philanthropy Council at Colgate
The Student Philanthropy Council (SPC) of the Upstate Institute at Colgate University is studying charitable giving and non-profit organization, and will give $10,000 in grants to non-profits in the region as part of the course.
A Request for Proposals (RFP) will be available on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 on the Upstate Institute website at http://upstate.colgate.edu. Applications for the grants are due to the group by Monday, March 8, 2010, and the Colgate student members of the SPC will make decisions about award recipients by mid-April.
According to Professor Ellen Percy Kraly, Director of the Upstate Institute, the Council is considering several themes including programs that target at-risk youth, or preserve the environment or cultural climate of the region. Further, the Council is interested in funding programs that combine these areas of interest, but will also consider funding programs that specialize in only one. Grant applications will be accepted for requests up to $5,000.
Members of the SPC will be available to answer questions about the program at two informational meetings to be held on Thursday, February 11, 6:30-8:00pm, and Thursday, February 18, 6:30-8:00pm in the Parlour Room of the Colgate Inn, Hamilton, New York.
The philanthropy program, now in its fourth year, is supported by the Brennan Family Foundation of Ohio, which has ties to the university through Jay Brennan ’81. The Foundation made a gift of $50,000 to support the program for five years. Each year, $10,000 of that grant is made available to the SPC to provide grants to area non-profits.
