Grantmaking:
Who can apply for a grant?
Organizations that are federally recognized as having 501(c)(3) status or similar charitable status, located in either Oneida or Herkimer County.
What types of projects are funded?
Grants are made to the following areas: arts, child care, education, elderly, environment, health, human services/youth, and public/society benefits. The Foundation seeks to invest in programs that offer the greatest opportunity for change in the community, leverage investment of other community resources and improve the quality or scope of charitable works in the community.
Is there a deadline for grant applications?
No, The Foundation accepts grant applications on a rolling basis.
What is the grant application process?
Nonprofit organizations are strongly encouraged to contact The Community Foundation program staff before submitting a proposal. The Grants Committees meet periodically to determine if grant proposals will be approved or declined.
Who decides how The Foundation's funds are distributed?
The professional staff and the Grants Committee review all grant applications first. The Grants Committee is a group of highly respected community leaders who are knowledgeable about the charitable needs of the community. Individuals who have "Donor Advised Funds," can participate in the grantmaking process by suggesting grants from their named fund. These recommendations are non-binding on The Foundation, but The Foundation honors them whenever possible.
Are grant decisions made public?
All grants made by The Community Foundation are made public through The Foundation’s publications and may be subject to additional publicity by The Community Foundation.
